Three community conversations to guide nonprofits as they plan for the coming year

The next year or more will look different from any other we have experienced. We will be living with uncertainty and public health considerations and advisories are expected to change regularly. How are nonprofits adapting to this new environment? How can we balance concern for safety with resuming critical community services? What sort of “new normal” can we expect?

In this series, we are asking leaders from organizations that are ahead of the curve to share their journey with us and help us understand what we all need to be thinking about as many of us resume our work.

What are the logistical and operational issues nonprofits need to be thinking about as they plan to resume programs? How should nonprofits be thinking about their spaces, supplies, donations, staff travel and client interaction? What policies are needed to ensure workplace safety? How should nonprofits plan for personal protective equipment or fit their offices with new barriers to inhibit germ transmission? Should nonprofits consider staggering staff schedules or use other strategies to ensure that the organization can maintain program continuity even if some staff are ill or need to quarantine? How can nonprofits increase public confidence that they are taking appropriate precautions? How will our budgets be affected?

What are the human resources considerations that nonprofits need to be thinking about as they move toward reopening programs and sites? How are nonprofits supporting their employees to be able to work safely? How do we manage it if we need to reduce our workforce or if the staffing we need fluctuates? How do we deal with tough decisions about what to ask of our staff, especially if they have health conditions that make them vulnerable to COVID? Who can work remotely, and who can’t? What new policies do we need to adopt in order to ensure that staff are treated fairly? How do our volunteer programs need to change?

We’ve done things we never thought we could during this pandemic. We’ve figured out how to work from home more than we ever thought possible, we’ve expanded technology access for many in our communities, and we’ve delivered services remotely. Everything from school to choir practice to counseling is happening via videoconference. There have been benefits like increased participation opportunities for people with mobility limitations, less traffic and air pollution, time and cost savings from reduced travel. Funders have increased their flexibility and acted to get additional funding to many nonprofits quickly. Now that we have this expanded view of what is possible, are there areas where we want to embrace change and do things differently moving forward, even if we don’t have to?
